Chamonix aires - an update for overnighting

For those who have been to, or wanted to go to, Chamonix - the heart of Alpine skiing and climbing - then it's now more difficult with a motorhome.

We dropped in this week to get some skiing in to find that the car park at Le Grepon (Aiguille du Midi cable car) now has height barriers and is no longer available to motorhomes. I asked at the Office du Tourisme to check and it was confirmed that it is no longer in use. No reasons given and I got the impression that the OdT staff are not happy about it. Might be something to do with Cham becoming more upmarket and losing it's soul as a mountain town?

There is a 24hr parking area alongside the road from Cham to Argentiere just beyond the MBC pub and Sports Complex, where you can overnight for free - but that is basically it. There is a skanky saissonaires/travellers area just beyond Le Grepon but it's pretty unsavoury.

Alternatively, you can use the far end of the Grand Montets car park in Argentiere but it's not flat, can be muddy or icy, and hasn't much to recommend it.

Thanks for the update.. We've used the end carpark at Argentiere in the past but did get blocked in for a few days by a snowplough driver who obviously didn't want any others joining us!

How is the snow, I don't think there has been a lot this month has there?

Hi Kev

We did just a days skiing at the Grand Montets and despite little snow and lots of sun for a few weeks, the snow was in quite good condition even off piste. Hard packed sure, but took an edge well and not too icy. Best if you chose the more shaded areas but as GM is mainly North facing it stays in good nick. Some cracking bump fields!!

Generally more fresh snow needed for the Easter period though. Shame we had no powder but still a good couple of weeks skiing.

Thank you for that.
We visit in June so will have to rearrange things.
Last year we were passing near to St Moritz and decided that we would take a small detour and have a look at the town.
There was nowhere to park! We asked a few locals and even called into the petrol station in the town to ask.
There were 'Private Parking' signs on every road and parking place throughout the town....plus height barriers.
We didn't stop in St Moritz

Ted.

that's fine in summer when there are a number but only one open in winter - Les Deux Glaciers in Les Bossons. that's fine for a longer stay, but it,s the short stay problems that are the issue here. but saying that, it's similar across many ski resorts where finding a place for 2 or 3 nights is a problem.

We'll stay at Camping Mer de Glace which seems OK.

that's not open in Winter - only Les Deux Glaciers is an open winter campsite in the Chamonix valley

Just to echo what FB says; we have also stayed at Les Deux Glaciers but it is a 30 minute bus trip to the ski lifts whereas the aires are much closer.

Favourite for us is the Argentiere upper carpark which is quiet, adjacent to lift and for us is close to a friends apartment. No services though but can manage fine for 3 days.

the Grand Montets upper car park was pretty muddy last week which put us off staying over, so after skiing we left and went down the valley and overnighted at the Lac du Passy between Passy and Sallanches. it's a lovely quiet lake and was very peaceful for a night.

we left to head back home the following morning. another skiing season over....boo!
