Currently in Fussen Germany & looking to onward travel to Innsbruck Austria. The road looks a little twisty, anyone travelled this route in a mh? Looking for a bit of confidence support.

Part of the route to Innsbruck can be motorway along the A12. If you are over 3500kg then you will need a Go Box which is a bit of a hassle. It is possible to avoid the motorway and get the whole way to Innsbruck on normal roads which are free to use.

If you are 3500kg or under and want to use the motorway, you need a vignette about €8 for 10days. You buy the vignette in a filling station, probably available in Fussen. There are several filling stations along the way. Fuel generally cheaper than in Germany, there is a cheap station at the top of the Fern Pass.

Overall the route from Fussen is no problem for a Motorhome, but there are several steep and twisty sections. The road is used by many HGVs, so there is no problem with width, however overtaking can be problematic.

Leave Fussen and join the A7 for a short distance within Germany then cross border into Austria on the 179 (continuation of A7). Then join the 189 and head to Telfs then join 171 to Innsbruck.

If using the motorway join the A12 at Motz.

It was a few years ago, but we've done that journey in the opposite direction and I don't remember any problems.

We came from Mittersill, over the Gerlos Pass to Innsbruck. Via the Wohnmobilstellplatz at Wankbahn, on to Oberammergau, and continued on through to Fussen..

Other routes are available.

have driven the Fern pass route from Fussen towards Innsbruck in winter when it was bucketing with snow - it was not easy but doable as it's a key highway so is kept running as much as possible for HGV traffic. so in summer, it won't be a problem but I'd avoid a) in winter when it's snowing, and b) on a Saturday as that's holiday changeover day so get snarled with traffic. stick to midweek if possible

Dave

I'd be obliged if you come back when you have done the route and post your thoughts.

We are doing the same route in a couple of weeks time.

Thanks

Graham
