Well that throws a spanner in my assumption that electric brakes were illegal in Europe Andy.

So it would appear that the newer (non inertia over-run) systems do indeed comply its the Con & Use Regs AND will not fall foul of the “You must be able to reverse them without the brakes dragging” rule that scuppers the older inertia systems.

Well I have learnt something today!! If it’s only how to eat humble pie because, like you, I was sure that electrically operated trailer brakes were illegal in the U.K. no idea of their legality in the EU but of course if it’s legal in the home country it’s legal elsewhere in the EU, like yellow number plates on the front (Holland) and white ones on the back (France) I still struggle to see how the Spanish can hold differing views as, when attached via an A frame, any car, by legal definition, becomes a trailer. Foreigners eh??

Yes but those links were to manufacturers who are, to put it kindly, hardly going to show their product in a bad light.

The link I posted is to a .Gov document so is factual. I am not saying the Smart-Tow information is incorrect but I for one much prefer to see the information from a totally independent source (such as .Gov)

The VITAL point to remember here is that “older” A frame systems, that rely just on an inertia over run braking system (like caravans but without the “reversing” mechanism) are not legal.

I know I have in the past been VERY sceptical about electrically operated trailer brakes being legal.

I am happy to state, in writing, that as far as electrically operated brakes being used on A frame set-ups not being legal

I WAS WRONG! (and I am sufficiently fair-minded to publically admit it)

(I still maintain that the simple over-run systems are not legal though)

It appears that there are electric brakes and electric brakes! I was/am seriously considering changing to the LNB system, mainly because after 25+years using the Car at Tow system, my age is telling me the A frame is getting heavier and heavier.


However as I understand it the LNB system is activated by the towing vehicles brake light circuit, which Section 4 appears to say is illegal. I'm also wodering how Section 3 effects the LNB setup, although that should be easily dealt with.


We seem to be getting there, but not quite.
