Looks like a very good and inexpensive automatic option for UK and near continent. The antenna itself is a Selfsat one which has been around for several years.

I've not seen it before so I'll certainly consider it, I'll keep my freestanding dish for trips further afield.

It looks very good with some well thought out features,it has autoskew and a remote control that can select 9 different user defined satellites.

I have always had doubts about the security aspect of leaving something worth £650 on the ground outside the motorhome but the avtex snipe can apparently be easily mounted to the roof.

Go to 3.30 on the youtube video,it looks like it has a base plate which is bolted to the roof and the avtex snipe bolts to that. The drawback would be getting on the roof and connecting the satellite cable to it,unless it is possible to make it a permanent fixture and come through the roof with a waterproof gland. It is also only 18 cms high when folded.

There are a couple of other alternatives to an automatic free standing dish but neither of them offer permanent fitting to the roof afaik. It could be a relatively inexpensive option to a fixed automatic system or could be used as a free standing system outside the motorhome, definitely worth further investigation.

cheers Steve

Good morning Steve,

In have spoken to Avtex who are supplying this and the product sounds very promising however they have advised that the unit does not come with a base plate to enable roof mounting, and they are not presently stocking it.

I think the manufacturers site is http://www.i-do-it.co.kr/

Regards,
Chris

It's also sold as the Selfsat Snipe and there are a lot more info and prices available under that name, prices are considerably higher. The baseplate is listed as an option but shown in all the photos, I'd imagine it's pretty easy to knock one up from aluminium.

Link to the selfsat manual pdf.

Thanks for that Chris, can't help thinking that Avtex are missing out by not supplying the base plate, that is an important feature for motorhomers.

It is possible to get one at £649 here with the base plate, although they don't advertise the price, you have to ring them.

cheers Steve

Good morning Steve,

They are purchasing the Snipe from Avtex, so whether this company has found an alternative supplier, manufacturered their own base plate or whether Avtex are now supplying a base plate is unknown as my conversation with them was over a month ago.

Chris

I guess it will be the same as the equivalent size Camos Flatsat which is the Flatsat Plus.

Camos Flatsat Plus footprint from Automate.org.uk website, shows the obsolete satellite so will be less than this by the end of this summer.

The more I look at this the better it looks. The ACDC tv firm WAKK44 linked to are making their own baseplate but I don't have a price yet.

The mounting plates being custom made by ACDC tv are £79.99.

One thing I'm not sure about is whether there is an automatic retraction input from the ignition.
